SPECIALIST
Angelo Madrigale joined Doyle in 2011 and is the SVP/ Senior Specialist in Fine Art.
In 2012, Angelo was the specialist for Doyle’s inaugural Street Art auction, the first sale in the United States devoted to Street Art and Graffiti. This auction introduced the work of many Street Art and Graffiti artists to the auction market, and set world auction records for Margaret Kilgallen, Revok, How & Nosm and many others. Angelo is the Specialist in charge of the Contemporary works in Doyle New York’s semiannual auctions of Post-War & Contemporary Art, which showcase works by established artists alongside the works of emerging Contemporary, Street Art and Graffiti artists. The success of this strategy is evidenced by the auction records regularly achieved for such artists as Martin Wong, Boaz Vaadia and Will Fowler, among many others.
For the 2017 5Pointz v. Wolkoff trial, Angelo was called on to testify as a fact witness for the 5Pointz artists. His testimony regarding the artistic and community value of 5Pointz was valuable in achieving the positive final ruling for the artists, setting a landmark precedent for the legality of graffiti and public art.
Born in Delaware, Angelo was raised in Pennsylvania, where his father worked in Design and Development at Knoll on projects with such designers as Robert Venturi and Joe D'Urso. Angelo grew up immersed in art and design, beginning with private tutoring in fine art and musical percussion at age eight. At age nine, Angelo starred in the 1987 New World Pictures film, Time of Tears, which enjoyed a full theatrical release. He would later record and tour nationally in several rock and jazz bands throughout the 1990s and 2000s, which led to a recording contract with Warner Bros in Japan.
In 2005, Angelo and his wife, Lisa, opened Metropolis Gallery in Pennsylvania, which showcased works by emerging Contemporary Artists together with Modern and Contemporary Design. The gallery was named one of the world’s “Top 100 Galleries” by Juxtapoz Magazine in 2010.
Angelo earned a BFA in Related Arts from Kutztown University. He was also an adjunct Professor at Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, where he created and taught the courses, Understanding the Global Contemporary Art Market and The Business of Art.
