Dang Xuan Hoa

Vietnamese, 1959-Present

Dang Xuan Hoa was born in 1959 in Nam Định, Vietnam and graduated in 1983 from the Hanoi College of Fine Arts, now known as the Vietnam University of Fine Arts. A longstanding member of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, his work is held in several public collections, including the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum and the Singapore National Fine Arts Museum.

Initially focused on still life, Dang Xuan Hoa evolved toward figuration and portraiture. He integrated motifs from his earlier compositions, such as ceramic vases, flowers, and oil lamps, into more psychologically charged studies of family and daily life. His works reveal a balance of tradition and experimentation, rendered in thick, expressive brushwork and a strong color palette.

Dang Xuan Hoa gained international recognition in the late 1980s and early 1990s, participating in the 3rd Havana Biennial in 1989. He has since exhibited in the United States, Europe, and across Asia, emerging as one of the leading voices in contemporary Vietnamese painting.

For collectors and institutions, his work offers a compelling bridge between Vietnam’s cultural past and present, reflecting the complexities of a nation in transition. His compositions are prized for their emotional presence and their nuanced portrayal of everyday Vietnamese life.
